Personality & Traits

General Overview Mostly gruff, serious, and a man who does not suffer fools. Surprisingly, despite his apparent bad attitude, John is very approachable and people instinctively trust him. He has no patience for stupidity or recklessness, but is happy to teach what he knows. John is first and foremost a survivor, but with a vested interest in keeping those around him alive as well.
Strengths & Weaknesses John is a very capable combatant, both hand to hand and with knives. He can use a phaser when necessary with a fair amount of accuracy, but dislikes them. He is a bit of a jack of all trades, speaking just enough of several different languages to discuss tactics or cut a deal, and has a number of contacts spread across the quadrant. He can fly a ship, albeit without a great deal of finesse. He can put together a repair that will hold a few days, program basic functions into a computer, and improvise explosive devices. However, he is closed off as a person and defines himself very much by his role in a unit and by what he can contribute to a group. He is a capable and the experienced leader, but he is also a capable and experienced soldier. The life John has lead means he doesn't get close to people easily, and defines people more by what they can do than who they are as people. He is perplexed by the emotional ups and downs of everyday life, and has difficulty understanding why people can't just shut it off and do their jobs the way he can.
Ambitions John needed to retire, but he didn't want to retire. He could have found somewhere quiet to make a life for himself, but he doesn't want to be bored or useless. John feels that he still has something to offer the galaxy, and that it still has something to offer him. His main ambitions are to keep himself occupied and interested, but with less explosions than he's used to. He's also contemplating getting a pet.
Hobbies & Interests John hasn't had the chance to develop many hobbies beyond drinking, but he's very, very good at it. He enjoys annoying bureaucratic types. He can juggle, fold origami, and knows the words to a lot of Klingon drinking songs.

Personal History John has been, for mist of his life, a 'terrorist for hire'. He doesn't talk much about where he grew up, but when he was sixteen the planetary government was violently overthrown with the aid of an off-planet mercenary group. When the group left, they took John with them.

John stuck with the mercenaries, The Talons, until his recent retirement. He started as an extra hand aboard the ship and extra gun in a fight, before being trained as a member of the main fighting force. By the time he was 24, John was leading covert infiltrations. By the time he was 30, John was commanding one of the six Talon units. He lead his unit into several conflicts, most notably aiding the Bajoran Resistance in their efforts against the Cardassians, and fighting in the Dominion War to liberate the locations the Federation deemed strategic losses or not worth defending.

Being a part of a mercenary commando unit is a young man's game, and John has been getting a little slower. And a little slower can mean a lot deader, so it's time to give up fighting and find something else to keep him occupied.
